Flying with Spirit

I do not consider myself a high maintenance gal when it comes to flying. I never pay for the extra comfortable seats or the priority boarding. So, when I found myself booking a flight with Spirit, I said to myself, how bad can it be?

Let’s just say, I will not be flying with Spirit again if I can help it. If you are flying with them soon, keep reading to learn about my experience and my tips for flying with them.

Paying for the Carry-On, Is it Worth It?

This will depend on how long you vacation is. If you are taking a short three to four-day trip, then I recommend you save your money and stick with the personal item they allow. Spirit’s personal item is bigger than you might think. If you are not sure if your bag will fit, then you can get this bag instead. The dimensions are right under what Spirit allows, so you’ll be sure to pass without a glitch.

Personally, I recommend you don’t overstuff your bag because this will have to fit under the sit in front of you. So it can be uncomfortable for you later on.

Are the Big Front Seats Worth the Money?

Nope, don’t do it. I tried their “big front seat” after getting it at a very good price (tip: wait to buy your seat a few hours before your departure for the best price) and was not impressed. The only advantage to these seats was the proximity to the exit door.

These seats were more uncomfortable than the regular ones. Yes, you have more space, but your back will be killing you by the time you land. They do not recline (not even a bit), so you spend your entire flight sitting at a hard 90-degree angle. I had a much better flight sitting in the regular seats, than in the big front seats (and without paying an extra dollar).

Paying for Zone 2 Boarding, Yay or Nay?

Spirit gives you the option of paying $5.99 for Zone 2 boarding (roundtrip), and this might actually be a worthy expense. If like me, you worry about overhead space for your luggage then this is a cheap add-on you can purchase before your flight.

For $9 you can also choose to go through faster security at the airport, but truth be told I don’t know how efficient this might be. So, if you’ve tried this and have any comments or recommendations to share then please do so below. I’d love to hear it!

Overall, Spirit is a budget airline that can get you from point A to point B. But do not expect anything more than the bare minimal. If you have any experiences or recommendations for flying with Spirit, I would love to hear them. Until then, go on exploring!
